Freelance marketing specialist Sarah Ruddock won the Freelancer Project Award at the IPSE Freelancer Awards 2023, for project managing a major publishing house’s journey to become partners of the ‘Lit in Colour’ campaign.
Initially launched by Penguin Random House and the Runnymede Trust, Lit in Colour aims to support schools to make the teaching and learning of English literature more inclusive.
Consulting with a range of departments and stakeholders, as well as setting up a BAME advisory board to guide the project, Sarah supported Bloomsbury to carve its own niche in the campaign by focusing on bringing more dramas and plays authored by writers of colour into the school curriculum.
As a result of the project, 300 schools are now teaching Tanika Gupta’s play ‘The Empress’, with more to follow in 2023, and more than 250 schools have attended playwright Q&As hosted as part of the project.
The Freelancer Project Award recognises success in a specific project, such as an event, campaign or fundraiser – whether in a full-time freelance career, or part of a side-hustle business alongside full-time work or study.
The judges said that Sarah “has provided open discussion and enabled the next generation to have greater awareness of diverse talent. They are delivering change to an area which is long overdue modernisation."
